*Until the 1850s, British India imported alcohol.
*In contrast to the practice of importing alcohol, European Edward Abraham Dyer established a brewery with the intention of catering to the British community in India.
*In 1855, Dyer founded E. Dyer & Co Ltd in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, to manufacture breweries.
*Following the establishment of the Kasauli Unit, Dyer expanded operations by opening breweries and distilleries in Simla, Solan, Lucknow, and Mandalay (Burma).

*In 1887, Henry George Meakin founded Meakin & Co Ltd to establish breweries.
*H.G. Meakin acquired Dyer's Kasauli and Simla breweries and also initiated new operations in Dalhousie, Ranikhet, Chakrata, Darjeeling, and Kirkee.
*E. Dyer & Co Ltd and Meakin & Co Ltd operated independently for many years.
*During the First World War (1914-18), the two companies merged to form Dyer Meakin & Co Ltd, a new joint-stock company.
*When Burma was separated from India in 1935, the company with Indian assets and liabilities changed its name from Dyer Meakin & Co Ltd to Dyer Meakin Breweries Ltd.

*In 1949, Narendra Nath Mohan acquired Dyer Meakin Breweries Ltd and assumed control.
*Dyer Meakin Breweries Ltd was renamed Mohan Meakin Breweries Ltd in 1966.
*Narendra Nath Mohan had three sons: Ved Rattan Mohan, Kapil Mohan, and Sukhdev Mohan.
*After Narendra Nath Mohan's death in 1969, Ved Rattan Mohan took over the management.
*Ved Rattan Mohan diversified his distilleries and breweries unit by adding new lines of business, including breakfast foods and juices, glass manufacturing, vinegar, and cold storage.
*Ved Rattan Mohan is credited with creating renowned products such as Old Monk, a dark rum, and two other popular liquor brands, namely Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle.
*After Ved Rattan Mohan's death in 1973, Narendra Nath Mohan's brother, Kapil Mohan, assumed management.
*Mohan Meakin Breweries Ltd was renamed Mohan Meakin Ltd in 1980.
*Upon Kapil Mohan's death in 2018, the management was taken over by Sukhdev Mohan's sons, Hemant Mohan and Vinay Mohan.

*Ved Rattan Mohan named his creation Old Monk after Gumnami Baba, an old monk thought to be Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

*In the 1950s, Ved Rattan Mohan traveled to Europe, where he found inspiration in the calm lives of Benedictine monks and the drinks they created.
*Ved Rattan Mohan named his creation Old Monk as a homage to Benedictine monks and their traditions.
Jallianwala Bagh
*Edward Abraham Dyer's son, Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, carried out the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.
*During an official visit to Shimla in 1960, Prime Minister Nehru declined to visit the Dyer Meakin Breweries unit because it was named after Edward Abraham Dyer, whose son was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
*Prime Minister Nehru's rejection provided a solid reason to remove Dyer's name, stated Lieutenant General Pradeep Khanna (retd), whose father Krishan Gopal Khanna was the company's Financial Director from 1959 to 1975.
